Welcome to our parish website.
Ss Mary and Modwen is the Catholic Church in the town centre of Burton-upon-Trent which is part of the Archdiocese of Birmingham. While the current parish church was built in 1871 the historic links of the parish go back to its patron, St Modwen, who founded a church in the town in the 7th Century.
Today, the parish continues to be a place of welcome and prayer to its parishioners and visitors to the area. We hope you are able to use this website to find out about what is happening in the parish.
The Season of Advent
The Church begins a new year with the season of Advent. This is a joyous time in the life of the Church as we prepare and wait for the coming of our Saviour, Jesus Christ.
Advent has two themes. The first is a time of preparation for the Solemnity of Christmas. That is when the Church throughout the world celebrates Jesus' first coming. The second theme of Advent calls us to prepare once again for the day when Christ will come again in glory.
It is a season of joy, of expectancy of hope. As we prepare to meet Christ at Christmas with celebration, we wait for the day when that celebration will be an eternal one in the Kingdom of Heaven.
