Welcome to our parish website.
Ss Mary and Modwen is the Catholic Church in the town centre of Burton-upon-Trent which is part of the Archdiocese of Birmingham. While the current parish church was built in 1871 the historic links of the parish go back to its patron, St Modwen, who founded a church in the town in the 7th Century.
Today, the parish continues to be a place of welcome and prayer to its parishioners and visitors to the area. We hope you are able to use this website to find out about what is happening in the parish.
The Season of Lent
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the season of Lent. A sacred time in the life of the Church for us to refocus our lives. As we prepare to celebrate the central mystery of our faith, the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus, we can ask ourselves, what prevents me from following Christ more faithfully?
On Ash Wednesday we will have ashes traced across our foreheads. As the priest places the ashes on each person he says, "Repent and believe the Gospel," or, "You are dust, and to dust you shall return." The whole point of giving something up, or doing something extra is to keep those thoughts as our focus, as for God's forgiveness especially in the Sacrament of Confession, live a life that reflects the Gospel, and remember, we are destined for Heaven do everything you can to get ready for that.
We pray that this Lent will be a fruitful and blessed time for each of us.
