The Keralite Community
The parish of Ss Mary and Modwen home to a number of families who originally come from a small state in south India called Kerala. They belong to the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, an Eastern Syrian Rite in full communion with the Catholic Church. It is the largest of the St Thomas Christian denominations with around 4 million believers that can trace their roots back to the Evangelist himself in the first century.
There are around 25 vibrant worshipping Keralite families who are actively involved in the parish. The Keralite community has Holy Mass celebrated in the Syro-Malabar rite once every month by a chaplain to the community from Birmingham. The community is also focused on imparting faith to the next generation of teenagers and children in the church. Catechism classes are conducted twice a month for around 25 - 30 children and are based around the love and teachings of Christ. There are 7 Catechists (teachers) whose main aim is to form Christ in the candidates entrusted to their care. There are also several members in the community who devote some of their time to various ministries in the church such as, Extraordinary Ministers, Readers, and Altar Servers. All of our parishioners are welcome to attend Mass in Syro-Malabar rite. |
